Bures Cricket Club Pavilion destroyed
in late-night blaze

A village has been left horrified
after a Cricket Club Pavilion at the heart of the community has
been destroyed in a blaze.
Firefighters were called to Bures and District Cricket Club at about
11.40pm on Tuesday to reports that the pavilion was ablaze.
Photos from the scene on Wednesday morning show that the historic
thatched building has been left destroyed as a result of the fire.
The building, which is located on the village's playing field, has
collapsed, and firefighters remain at the scene checking for hotspots.
Carl Wright, who is the club captain, described the incident as
"devastating for the village".
He added: "The cricket pavilion was not just a building it
was years of history and memories that have been destroyed in one
night.
"Everyone involved at the cricket club are absolutely devastated
as well as the people of Bures."
A spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said 12 crews
were sent to the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is expected to take
place the next day.

DEVASTATING FIRE
A note from the President of Bures & District Cricket Club
Chris Chambers on behalf Bures and District Cricket with the
dedicated support of Club Chairman Chris Crace, Club Captain Carl
Wright, Committee and Members wishes to thank everyone for their
profound messages of support and shared disbelief of the apparent
willful destruction of our Pavilion. It has been a landmark building
enjoyed so much by those using it and many observing its presence
on a daily basis.
As our Chairman has reported, a new Pavilion will rise from the
ashes.
It will take time, planning and above all fundraising and wide support.
For all those who have expressed their horror, we join you with
similar thoughts.
Please be assured we will engage with you all once a structured
plan is formulated. As a club, we are immensely grateful for your
outpouring of support.

Chairman of the village cricket team Chris Crace has promised
that in times of adversity the club "will rise again
The club had only just raised around £30,000 to rethatch the
roof of the clubhouse, which Mr Crace said was "great to have
achieved that, but all for nothing it would seem".
He said: "We are all completely
devastated. It was a dreadful sight to see.
"It is such a huge part of Bures,
right in the middle of the village, the pavilion, as far as I know,
has been there for a hundred years or more.
"For us, it brings a lot of
people together, of course, we have played cricket there for many,
many years, but lots of people have hired it for charity matches,
and people have had their birthday parties there.
