Run in conjunction with:

Department of Archaeology, Cambridge University,
Leigh Alston (Architectural Historian,Bures)

A Community Dig was held on Bures Common during June 25th and the 29th, led by Dr Carenza Lewis of Cambridge University.

The land was recently purchased by the parishioners of Bures and lies on the Essex bank of the River Stour.

Leigh Alston believes the dig could provide evidence of a rubbish tip dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries and this will also indicate if this has been a permanent Open Space.

Other ancient maps indicate the presence of a stream running across the Common.

The Community Dig comprised of digging three trenches.

It was anticipated these trenches would show evidence of the "Rubbish Tip"
and also intercept the course of the documented stream.

Tuesday 19th June 2012. one week before the dig.

GeoPhys and Magnetometer survey taking place to identify the most appropriate places to excavate.
Unfortunately the reading turned out to be inconclusive to the whereabouts of any significant areas to excavate.
