Looking towards village store circa 1885- 1888

On the left of the photo is the Coffee Tavern & Club Rooms which at that time was owned by the Hitchcock family, the lady in the doorway is most likely to be Mrs Maria Howlett who was listed as the manageress. Next is the Queens Head, the owner Geo Cousins was listed in the county directories 1883,1885 but not in 1888. The shop facing is listed John Pratt Grocer, Draper & Baker, he was also agent for the Norwich Union Insurance.
Harry Chambers, Harness maker was said to have lived in one of the cottages on the church wall.

The cottages alongside todays church wall, were built in 1559 and demolished in May 1900

The cottages on the right have long since been demolished.
All the other outlets have ceased trading.
The last to go was the Queens Head during late 2007

Reference:- George Eastman (Kodak)is particularly remembered for introducing flexible film in 1884. Four years later he introduced the box camera, and photography could now reach a much greater number of people.
